it is anyone’s dream to be considered by our bosses to have the exceptional talent to come the CEO one day. Well, they have this program called HPS (high performance staff, duh~) where on selected few will have to opportunity to be enrolled in this group. Obviously it is based on the performance, but what is not so obvious is how these people are selected, the criteria of which is judged during what is called the development workshop interview
recently I’ve chatted with some who failed the interview (by failed, I mean that did not manage to be enlisted in the program) and here are some of our conclusion
Empathy, or having too much of it. This is one of the most common comment to those rejected. Apparently if you are a high-flyer, you cannot have much of this trait. What is empathy? Why is it so not needed in the ‘listed criteria’?
This is from www.wisegeek.com
Empathy is a feeling different from sympathy. When one is sympathetic, one implies pity but maintains distance from another person’s feelings. Empathy is more a sense that one can truly understand or imagine the depth of another person’s feelings. It implies feeling with a person, rather than feeling sorry for a person.
Empathy is a translation of the German term Einfühlung, meaning to feel as one with. It implies sharing the load, or “walking a mile in someone else’s shoes,” in order to appropriately understand that person’s perspective.
So what’s so bad of having a lot of empathy?
At large, having empathy is an essential trait of a leader. But having too much of it means that when it comes to difficult decisions, especially when it comes to matters concerning business decisions vs. staff related issues, those with high empathy would normally find it hard to make the necessary difficult choice.
But having less empathy means caring less about people. It means that you have to be cold. You have to be blunt. You have to be direct. At what ever cost. And this is the trait of people that is inducted into the program. All ‘macam bagus’ people. I’m correct and you are wrong type of guy. (we all agree that everyone inducted into the program has this trait that can be seen by the naked eyes)
The bigger question is do I have to sell my soul (by that I mean changing the caring and empathetic person I am) to be amongst the elite? Or alternatively (I always believe that there are alternatives, no matter in what kind of situation you are in) am I able to portray that I’m cold when I’m not to the interviewers? (which during my session are 3 makciks). i don’t think that’s too hard to do..
